12. How To Make A Puppet Head Pattern From Scratch

This is an updated video that shows you how to make a puppet head pattern from scratch. The YouTuber even includes a free pattern!

Step By Step Muppet Puppet Creation

Step 1

The first step in making a Muppet is to pay close attention to the materials that are needed to complete projects like this. In fact, if you want this project to be easy without any unnecessary disruptions, you need to gather all of the supplies, tools, and equipment that are required.

And, you need to ensure that everything is placed in one centralized area. So, let’s get started by listing all of the required materials, and the detailed instructions of the steps that need to be taken.

Main Materials Needed

  • Thread
  • Hot Glue
  • A needle that is made specifically for sewing
  • Scissors for cutting

Fabric Materials ½ yard (highly recommended materials include: felt, fleece or fur) each of which will work well in this type of project

Materials like felt to create the uniqueness and looks of the mouth. You will need at least 5 by 5 inches of felt materials.

Materials to create the look of a simulated mouth plate. Again the dimensions should be at least 5 by 5 inches and the materials used should be made up of stiff felt and crafted materials.

Sewing Machine

Miscellaneous Items needed for ears, eyes, hair, nose, eyebrows like buttons, plastic spoons, pieces of wigs, wool, yarn, feathers

Step 2

As referenced above, today everyone has access to a wide variety of ways to make a DIY Muppet. Therefore, once you have gathered all of the supplies, tools and equipment that is required to complete this type of project, your next step may involve using a downloadable print of the muppet that you want to make.

These downloadable patterns are not only relatively easy to locate on different online sites, they can be used by virtually anyone who has a need.

For instance, if you want to download a printable pattern of Fozzie Bear, Kermit the Frog, or Miss Piggy, you should identify the puppet that you have selected and print the patterns of each real time.

Step 3

After you have printed the pattern of the puppet that you will be making, you need a place to lay out the fabric that you will be using on a traceboard. Again, the type of fabric that you select will depend on your preference (i.e. Fleece, felt, or fur). The choice of materials is up to you, your preferences, your needs and your budget.

You should always make sure that you are flipping the pattern over when you are tracing the second half. You will be using these tracings to cut out all the distinct separate pieces.

For instance, if you are making a DIY Muppet of Kermit the Frog, you want the front and back sides of your Muppet to be equal in shape, sizes, diameters and lengths.

Step 4

After you have completed the process of tracing all of your distinct pieces, you should use sewing pins to keep the fabric in place and together as you sew. Also, by using sewing pins, it will prevent your fabric from gathering and will also help to keep the fabric completely straight as you stitch.

Step 5

After you have completed the sewing process in step 4, you will need to sew the back and front edges up.

Step 6

Once the back and front edges are complete, you will need to trace and then cut the fabric mouthpiece out of velvet or felt parts of the materials. And, then pin and stitch this mouthpiece together. To make sure the inside of the mouth is seen distinctly from the other parts of the puppet, you may want to use red or black or fabric colors.

Step 7

To make sure that your mouthpiece is secure with the support that is needed, there are a few more things that need to be done.

Trace and then cut out the mouth plate pattern one more time. However, to give this part of the Muppet piece the structure and sturdiness that’s needed, use foam or a stiff felt material.

You should also use a 5 by 5 craft square of craft foam if you do not use stiff felt for your mouth plate support.

Glue the mouthpiece plate that you have just sewn together to support the inside of your mouth fabric.

After you have created the perfect sturdy mouthpiece for your Muppet, you should turn your mouthpiece inside out.

Additionally, If you really want to save money on this type of project, you may want to consider using plastic materials from recyclable storage bins.

Step 8

To make sure that your Muppet looks like the character that you have selected, you can add specific features like the hair, hats, nose, eyes, ears, teeth, and any other features that apply.
