11. Easy Wind Generator
Tools and Materials You Need
The following tools and materials are a must-have for the project to be successful.
- Generator.
- Pieces of metal plates.
- Spindle and spokes.
- Studs.
- Magnet motor.
Step 1: Purchase a Reliable Generator
Some people prefer building their generators when making wind turbines. However, the process can be a bit complicated. Alternatively, you can consider using a magnet DC motor as your generator.
It is one of the simplest options. With that in mind, you should look for the best magnetic motors for your project.
While you can use old computer drive motors, you can use a 99 volt DC motor. This motor has been praised by many people for working well like a generator.
Step 2: Make Blades
At this point, you are required to connect the blades and hub. The easiest way to make your blades is by carving them from pieces of wood. However, that might look like a lot of work, especially if you are in a hurry to finish your project.
Nowadays, people make blades by cutting PVC pipes. Shape the PVC sections into airfoils. It would be better to pre-cut ABS pipes from your local home center. Instead of using a 4 inches pipe, use a 6 inches pipe.
Make sure that the long piece of pipe is cut into four parts.
Cut one blade and use it as a template to cut others. This means that you will have four blades at the end. One of the blades can be used as a spare.
Using a belt sander, smooth and shape the edges. The main reason for doing this is to make better airfoils. Although it’s not a lot of improvement, it does not hurt.
Step 3: Build the Hub
A hub is a crucial component in bolting the blades. It is also a must in attaching to the motor. Look for a pulley that can perfectly fit on the motor shaft.
It should not be very small in diameter to bolt the blades. Bolt the two pieces to make a hub. After drilling and tapping, you will have a nice looking hub.
Step 4: Build the Turbine Mounting
In making a turbine mounting, you should always make it simple. You can determine the correct length of wood by using the best piece of scrap wood pile. Remember to use a PVC pipe of 4 inches in diameter to design a shield.
The shield will be used on the motor and protect it from the weather.
Don’t forget to use an aluminum sheet. This is important as it keeps the tail turning into the wind. The role of the turbine snaps is to turn around into the wind every time the direction of wind changes.
Next, you should start thinking about bearing. The bearing allows the head to turn freely into the wind.
Use a piece of the conduit as your tower. Center an iron floor flange on the head unit. Kindly note that wires from your generator will pass through the drilled holes down to the center of the pipe.
Step 5: Make the Tower Base
On the tower, make a diameter disk from a piece of plywood. Use one inch pipe fittings to make U shaped assembly. The in-built Tee will easily turn on the pipe and form a hinge.
This will allow you to raise and lower the tower. Add a close nipple and at least one reducing fitting. Between the reducer and the two inches nipple, you are required to add a one inch Tee.
Step 6: Paint All the Wood Sections
Using white latex paint, paint all the wood sections. The main aim of painting the wood is to protect it from extreme weather. Although it is not a must, you can add a counterweight specifically on the left side.
This will balance the head.
Step 7: Finish the Wind Turbine Head
Now you should finish the head unit and attach the blades. If you had made accurate dimensions, you would definitely have an easy time finishing the wind turbine head.
Step 8: Make the Charge Controller
You have already sorted out the mechanical parts. At this step, you should start working on the electronic end of your project. Typically, a wind power system must have two or more batteries. The batteries are used to store the power produced by the turbine.
Using a blocking diode is recommended to prevent power from being wasted more so when the generator is spinning. There are different types of controllers you can look at. Fortunately, you can easily build your wind power systems if you have the right schematics.
You can make your charge controller by bolting the pieces to plywood. If you do it, you can just rebuild it in a weatherproof enclosure at the end of your project.
Step 9: Erect the Tower
You have completed all parts of your project. This can take a week but you can still do it quickly if you have built one before. The first thing you must do is set up and brace the tower.
To anchor the pole, you can use a nylon rope. Be sure to use hinges because they will quickly lower and raise the tower.
Step 10: Install the Wind Turbine
Erect the wind turbine and wait for the wind to blow. Your DIY wind turbine will start spinning when the wind is up.
Final Thoughts
That’s how easy it is to build a DIY wind turbine. You only need to follow every step outlined above to create a reliable wind turbine. Don’t forget to connect other crucial electronics such as batteries and charge controllers.
