How to Make a DIY Neon Sign

All you need is some basic tools and supplies, and a little bit of creativity. So what are you waiting for? Let’s get started!

Why make one instead of buying it

as before you may have had to go out and spend a hundred or more dollars on an electric sign, you can now make your own for around thirty. Not only is this more affordable, it also gives you the creative freedom to design whatever you like.

How to make one

What You’ll Need

  • EL wire in the color(s) of your choice to buy:
  • Wire cutters
  • A soldering iron and solder
  • Pliers
  • A screwdriver
  • Tape measure or ruler
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Protractor
  • Clear acrylic sheet, at least 24″ x 24″
  • Ruler or a straight edge
  • Exacto knife or a saw
  • Painter’s tape
  • A power drill and bits (optional)

Step One: Decide on the Design of Your Sign

The first step in making your DIY neon sign is to decide on the design. This can be anything you like, from a simple word or phrase to a complex illustration. If you’re not sure where to start, you can find inspiration online or in magazines.

Step Two: Draft Your Design

Once you have decided on a design, it’s time to draft it out. Draw your design onto the clear acrylic sheet using a pencil. Be sure to measure and mark the dimensions of your sign, so that you can cut it accurately later on.

Step Three: Cut Out the Sign

Using a saw or an Exacto knife, cut out the design from the acrylic sheet. If you’re using a saw, be careful not to cut yourself!

Step Four: Solder the EL Wire

Now it’s time to solder the EL wire to the acrylic sheet. First, measure and cut the wire to length, then strip off the insulation. Use a soldering iron to attach the wire to the acrylic sheet, making sure that it is securely attached.

Be sure to leave enough slack in the wire so that it can be easily hidden behind the sign.

Step Five: Tape the Wires in Place

Once the EL wire is attached, use tape to secure it in place. This will help to keep it from moving around and getting tangled up.

Step Six: Drill Holes for the Mounting Screws

If you want to mount your sign, you’ll need to drill holes for the screws. Use a power drill and a bit that is the same size as the screws you are using. Drill the holes in the corners of the sign, then screw in the mounting screws.

Step Seven: Hang Your Sign

Now that your sign is finished, all that’s left to do is hang it up! Use some screws or nails to attach it to the wall, and you’re done!

How to hang it

Once you have your sign completed, you’ll need to find a place to hang it. If you’re lucky enough to have an office with a door, you can

  • A power source (or battery pack)
  • Command hooks (optional)

How to Make It

Now that you know what you’ll need and to Find EL Wire.

EL wire can be found at most craft stores, as well as online retailers like Amazon. It comes in a variety of colors, so you can choose the one that best suits your needs. you will cut the wire to the desired length using wire cutters.

Be sure to leave enough extra wire on each end so that you can easily connect it to the power source and/or battery pack.

Next, use a soldering iron and solder to connect the two ends of the EL wire together. Make sure that the connection is secure to get started

Once the wire is connected, you can begin to form your letters. Use a pencil and protractor to draw out the desired shape of each letter, and then use scissors to cut it out.

Be sure to leave enough space between each letter so that the light will be visible.

Once you have all of your you have finished creating your letters, use pliers to twist the end of the EL wire around a screwdriver.

This will help keep it in place while you are attaching it to the power source or battery pack.
