When I decided to build my own tube amp, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. It seemed like a pretty simple process, but as it turns out, there’s a lot that goes into constructing a high-quality tube amp.

The first step was to gather the necessary components. I needed a preamp tube, a power transformer, a power tube, and a rectifier tube. I also needed an enclosure to house the components, and speaker wire to connect the amp to my speakers.

Once I had all the parts, it was time to start assembling the amp. The first step was to connect the power transformer to the power tube.

Then, I connected the rectifier tube to the power transformer. Next, I connected the preamp tube to the rectifier tube. Finally, I connected the speaker wire to the preamp tube and speaker terminals on the enclosure.

Tools and Materials Required

Step 1: Checking the Audio Circuit

The principle behind this tube amp is quite simple. It is worth noting that the signal refers to different circuits made up of two voltages, one being a negative and the other being positive. Typically, only the output is push-pull. However, both are different.

You need to put a tube that produces positive half of the AC on the audio signal. This will be pushing the speaker out. The other one should be placed so that it pushes the speakers in.

In the end, the sound will be produced. The two triodes in the amp will be connected.

Keep in mind that one tube will hold off, especially when the signal is extremely high. All the cathodes are connected. This means that the electrons will rush out of the cathode.

What results after is the current flowing in one direction from the circuit. Eventually, this will pass through the transformer.

Remember that the transformer produces a current that forces the speaker cone to protrude outwards. This will lead to the current flowing in one direction, specifically on the circuit. The opposite will happen when the signal goes low.

The main role of the grid is to resist the electrons back to the cathode. When the electrons go to the cathode, the tube will send the current in the other direction.

Step 2: Planning the Layout

It is considered the most important part of the whole project. If you put everything into place before starting your project, you will have made everything nicer. You would want to have an Audio circuit separately.

In that case, you must keep the tubes together in one area. Besides, the output transformer you use should be somewhere nearby.

It is good to know that placing all the transformers very close can be dangerous. Fortunately, you can be on the safe side if you put metal covers over the transformer. Use nuts and bolts to fix the transformers firmly to the ground plate.

Some people prefer placing the transformers opposite each other to eliminate harm. That being said, you can go ahead and rotate the transformers 90 degrees. Kindly do it slowly to prevent any possible damages.

You can implement the circuit in this tube amp differently. You don’t have to use circuit boards in your project. This project is more than a free-form circuitry.

Step 3: Building the Enclosure

Consider choosing an old cutlery box as your enclosure. Many people love using this type of case when on a budget. The sides and the tops of the case are not very thick.

This means that you will have an easy time mounting the components. It is much easier to ground things because you can connect the ground to the chassis with the metal enclosure. For those who will be using cutlery boxes, they must be ready to put several copper-coated plates.

Don’t mind using this case if you are ready for more work.

Step 4: Building Power Supply

Start by putting the power supply on one side and the audio circuit on the other side. Attach copper-coated plate on the inside of the case. The main essence of doing this is to connect anything to it.

If done properly, you will easily ground the exteriors of the transformers. Ensure that the transformers are well connected to the plate with the nuts. After doing that, it’s time to place the plate tightly on the inside part of the case.

You only need to read the schematic and solder correctly to put everything in order. However, there are chances of doing it wrongly a few times. Typically, there are two copper plates.

One of the plates is used for the power supply, while the other plate is for the audio circuit.It is advisable to have one plate to cover the whole surface. If you don’t have a big plate, don’t worry because you can still use a small one.

Step 5: Build the Audio Circuit

Before starting this step, keep in mind that the audio circuit might be a bit messy when starting. Once you have done several projects, you will have a neat project. The red capacitors you will be using should be 0.33uF.

They should not be exactly that. The only difference will be more or less bass.

Red capacitors are known to hold a charge. Therefore, you should be extra careful with them. That’s why it is advisable to discharge them before use.

All these components are worth replacing with high quality ones.

Step 6: Testing the Tube Amp

Now that you have put everything together, it’s the right time to test to see that it works to your expectations. Avoid plugging your tube amp on a socket. You might end up frying some components if you have made several mistakes.

Use a phone power adapter or low voltage device when testing your tube amp. This can be connected to the power sockets terminals. To test the voltage, you will need to have a multimeter.

If the power supply is performing as required, it’s time to hook up the tube amp and see how it sounds. Keep testing and fixing the parts until it works. But be extra careful to prevent damaging the terminals.

Final Thoughts

If you follow the step-by-step guide on making a tube amp, your tube amp will work. If you notice that the transformer you use does not have your expected hum, you can consider replacing or upgrading. That’s how easy it is to make a tube amp.
