My kids and I were driving around in our car the other day when we realized that we didn’t have any cup holders.

This was a problem because my kids like to drink drinks while they’re driving, and they can’t do that if they don’t have anywhere to put their drinks. We thought about buying some cup holders from the store, but then we realized that we could just make our own DIY cup holders.

So we got to work. We took some old cardboard boxes and cut them into the shape of cup holders. Then we taped them to the back of the car seat so that my kids could put their drinks in them. They were really excited about this, and they started using them right away.

It was a lot of fun making these DIY cup holders, and my kids loved using them. Now they can drink their drinks while they’re driving without having to worry about where to put them. Thanks, DIY cup holders!

A cup holder comes in handy when trying to balance a drink and drive/walk/sit simultaneously. And while you can buy one at any convenience store, why not try making your DIY version and save some money while adding a personal touch to your cup holder?

Wood and metal are both good choices, as they are durable and can be wiped down with a damp cloth if necessary. If you have young children or pets, you may also want to choose a cup holder that is slightly elevated, as this will help to prevent accidental tipping. By taking the time to select a well-made cup holder, you can help to keep your home clean and tidy.

How to make a DIY cupholder (my method)

While there are endless ways to DIY a cup holder, this post will show you two simple methods to make a cup holder. This project is perfect for anyone who likes to DIY, and you’ll need a few materials that you probably already have around the house. So let’s get started!

Method 1: Using a Plastic Container

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

For this project, you’ll need:

  • A plastic container (like a yogurt or butter container)
  • Scissors or a box cutter
  • A drill
  • A saw
  • Some wood screws
  • A piece of plywood
  • some sandpaper

If you don’t have all of these materials on hand, don’t worry—you can easily find them at your local hardware store.

Step 2: Cut the Plywood to Size

Using your saw, cut the plywood into a rectangle about 12 inches wide by 6 inches long. Once you’ve cut the plywood to size, use sandpaper to smooth out any rough edges.

Step 3: Drill Holes for the Screws

Next, use your drill to create four holes in the plywood—two on each side. These holes will be used to attach the cup holder to the surface it will be mounted on.

Ensure that the holes you drill are big enough for the screws you use. We recommend using screws that are at least 1/2 inch in diameter.

Once you’ve drilled the holes, set the plywood aside for now.

Step 4: Make the cupholder

Take your plastic container and cut off the bottom portion, so it’s just a cylinder shape with an open top. Use sandpaper to smooth out any rough edges.

Then, use your drill to create holes in the plastic cylinder that line up with the holes in the plywood. These holes will be used to attach the plastic cup holder to the plywood base.

Step 5: Assemble Your Cup Holder

Now it’s time to attach the cup holder to your chosen surface. If you’re attaching it to a wall or cabinet door, we recommend using screws and wall anchors for added stability.

However, if you’re attaching it to a tabletop or other piece of furniture, regular wood screws should suffice.

Start by screwing two screws into the holes on one side of the cup holder. Then, holding the cup holder in place, screw the remaining two screws on the opposite side.

If everything looks level and secure, congratulations—you’re done! Now, all that’s left to do is sit back and enjoy your handiwork.

Method 2: Using Paper Rolls

Materials Needed:

  • One empty toilet paper roll
  • A hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • A sharp knife (adult supervision is required if children are completing this project)
  • Scissors
  • Paint or markers (optional)
  • Ribbon or string (optional)

Step 1: Shape the Roll

Cut the toilet paper roll in half using a sharp knife. If you are doing this project with young children, an adult should handle this step. If you use paint or markers, now is the time to decorate the outside of the toilet paper roll halves.

Set the toilet paper rolls aside to dry if you are using paint. If you are using markers, proceed to step two.

Step 2: Glue the Rolls

Hot glue one end of each ribbon or string piece to the inside of one of the toilet paper roll halves. The other end of the ribbon should be left unglued for now. Repeat this step for as many cup holders as you would like to make.

Step 3: Finishing Touches

Once the glue has dried, use scissors to trim any excess ribbon from the top of the cup holder.

You now have a functional and stylish cup holder for yourself or to give as a gift.

Conclusion

Making a cup holder is a quick and easy project requiring only a few materials. Plus, it’s a great way to solve the problem of where to put your drink while working on a project or during other activities. Follow the steps above to learn how to make your cup holder today.
