How much water does a Christmas tree need?
A Christmas tree can absorb a gallon (about four litres) or more of water per day, especially when it is first cut. Check the water level every day during the first week after you bring the tree home and keep the stand filled so that the base of the trunk remains submerged.
After the first week, you can allow the water level to drop slightly below the base of the trunk and still provide adequate moisture.
My watering miracle
I was in the living room, looking at our dried-out Christmas tree. We had been so busy with the holidays that we forgot to water it. I knew it was too late to save the tree, but I decided to try anyway.
I grabbed the watering can and started pouring water onto the roots of the tree. The Christmas lights were still on, and they sparkled as the water hit them. I kept watering for what felt like hours, until finally the tree was revived!
We all gathered around it, amazed that our little Christmas miracle had happened. Our tree was saved, and we got to enjoy it for another year.
Christmas tree watering tips
In order to help your tree absorb water more efficiently and prevent it from drying out too quickly, make sure to:
- Use a sharp knife or saw to make a fresh cut on the trunk before placing it in its stand;
- Place your tree in a cool location away from heat sources such as fireplaces, vents, or televisions;
- Add water to the stand as soon as possible after cutting the trunk; and
- Keep the stand filled with water at all times.
If you follow these tips, you should have a healthy and happy Christmas tree that will last throughout the holiday season! Merry Christmas!
